Q. What is normal
physiology of fat and fat accumulation?
Answer: Iit is a very complex subject. We know now that fat
is an important tissue and has many functions. However, its main job is to
store excess energy as fat within the cells and to release this in times of
food shortage. But for the majority of
the world, there is no time of food shortage, so the stored excess energy is
never put to use. With imbalance between food intake and energy expenditure,
globally now the average amount of fat in the human body has increased within
the last 4 decades and especially in the last 20 years. We are seeing a
generational increase in obesity. For the first time ever, there are more obese
people than undernourished people in the world. 1/6th of the world
is overweight or obese.
In a growing child, the number of fat cells increases in
proportion to the increase of other tissues provided the child eats and plays
normally. However, today due to unprecedented over-eating plus increasing
sedentary life in childhood, there is a gross increase in excess calories –body
produces more fat cells to cope with this. So the obese child has increased
numbers of swollen fat cells; this will be carried into adulthoos and will be a
lifelong burden!
The excess of fat puts a load on the bones and joints, on
the heart and pancreas, leads to insulin resistance and diabetes, affects
hormone functions and can lead to infertility, decreased sex drive and various
other problems in daily life. It also affects self image, beauty and fitness.
Q: So is liposuction
the solution of overweight problem?
Definitely NO.
Liposuction is only a contouring tool that is very effective in getting
rid of local deposits permanently. It does not cause weight loss. But it helps
in weight loss by taking away the stubborn reservoirs and helping the lifestyle
change to start reducing the regular fat deposits.
Q: Which areas are
the best for liposuction?
The tummy when the fat is under the skin in the form of
rolls, the hip and back rolls, buttocks, thighs, arms and chest. It is not good
for the upper back, deep thigh compartments, inner deep fat in abdomen or for
overall apple like obesity.
Q: So where does
liposuction fit in ?
Answer: Fat deposits in the body are of two types. One that
can be reduced by dieting and other which is resistant. This resistant fat is
usually found in the hips and buttocks as well as abdomen. This fat is the
first to accumulate and the last to go. We call this the ‘privileged’ fat. So
over a period of time, the overall shape gets more and more pear like.
Liposuction is the only reliable way to remove this stubborn fat. Dieting does
not reduce this fat, it only affects the fat in other areas. The next time one
eats in excess, the fat goes straight to this privileged area. So the shape
gets progressively worse. Liposuction
reverses this trend. Also by combining well with lifestyle changes, it gives a
rapid improvement in shape
